Searching For Sugar Man (12A)
Cinema - Fri 5 Oct - Thu 6 Oct
This is an intriguing documentary about a Mexican singer/songwriter Sixto Rodriguez who was highly pitched by his US record label and music critics alike to be the next Bob Dylan back in the 70s. But sadly his albums didn’t sell and he was dropped by his label. Many years later during the South African Apartheid a bootleg copy of his album appeared on the scene and a South African record label buys the distribution rights to his music from the US label. Despite his music being banned from airplay on South African radio stations, his music became hugely popular amongst the white middle class rebels against apartheid and therefore sold millions of copies of his albums. But what became of Rodriguez – find out in this fascinating and mysterious documentary, winner of two Sundance Film Festival Awards.
