On The Road (15)

Based and set on the 1950s American classic novel by Jack Kerouac and directed by Walter Salles (The Motor Cycles Diaries), this wild road trip film has a strong cast including Sam Riley (Control, Brighton Rock), Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, A History of Violence) and a brief appearance from Steve Buscemi. Sal Paradise played by Riley is a budding writer who has just lost his father, and he hangs out with poet Carlo Marx. One day he meets the free spirited Dean who just lives from one day to the next taking the odd job here and there and is a bit of womaniser. Sal and his new found friend decide to go on a road trip along with Dean’s 16 year old wife Marylou who is played by Kirsten Stewart who gives an electric performance. Together they drink, go to parties and have sex and along the way meet other people all in pursuit of self-seeking pleasure giving Sal rich writing material. Does the film live up to the book?
